The USGS serves the Nation by providing reliable scientific information to: · describe and understand the Earth;

minimize loss of life and property from natural disasters;
manage water, biological, energy, and mineral resources; and
enhance and protect our quality of life.

How are Central Region science projects identified and chosen?

Science conducted in the Central Region is driven by issues of regional importance or urgency, stakeholder needs, geography or focus area, and funding.

Every year, the Central Region Science Associates gather input on science priorities to help identify and determine potential integrated science projects for the Central Region. They gather input from the following sources:

Future Science Directions
USGS Director's Annual Science Guidance
Central Region Science Opportunities

After reviewing and ranking (link to Science Associates Ranking Criteria) the alternatives, the Science Associates make recommendations to the Central Executive Leadership Team (CELT). CELT makes the final decision as to which projects are funded through Science on the DOI Landscape and Central Region Integrated Science Projects.
